The best voice of the left-blogosphere has given us yet another reason to adore him. Matthew Yglesias posted his Ultimate Nineties Alt-Rock Playlist today and, oh my lord, it has so many of my favorites. He includes two classic Goo Goo Dolls ballads, “Interstate Love Song”, “I'm Only Happy When It Rains”, even a K’s Choice. And I never thought I’d hear of Fastball’s “The Way” again. Some flops smuggled their way in (I cannot bear the lyrics of “Peaches” by the Presidents or the perplexing non-ironies that pepper Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic”), but if you want a quick and handy guide to The Broken Watch’s musical taste, check it out. If Mr. Yglesias had called his list "The Ultimate 90s Alt-Rock As Perceieved By Suits In America Playlist", it would have been more accurate. "Alt-rock" is an abominably lazy term, in my opinion, and "alternative" ceased to be a significant label by the time Bush (the band) made it big. Most of the stuff on the list was made after the successful alternative radio formula was devised by the business school grads who began to run the labels-sort of mopey, but buried in traditional anthemic power chords and glossily distorted guitars. It wasn't too far removed from the hair metal shit it was supposed to supplant. The first half of the 90s was a great time for popular music, as genre lines began to blur and new interesting ideas poured into both top 40 and mainstream rock radio. The second half blew all round, I can't think of a truly great American album released after 1995 that got any significant airplay.
