Who Would You Be Ruled By?

From the front lines of the Islamist war on vice. Allah’s preferred warriors, apparently, are a few young women from the local girls’ madrassa:

"I don't think Islam allows anyone to beat a woman and drag her through the streets like a dog," the Associated Press news agency quoted her as saying.

She told the BBC's Urdu service about 30 women from the madrassa had abducted her, helped by a similar number of men.

"They tied me, my daughter and daughter-in-law and my six-month-old grand-daughter up with rope," she said.

C.S. Lewis wrote that he would rather be ruled by robber barons than by puritans. The robber baron, he said, might sometimes take a break from his tyranny. The puritan, on the other hand, dominates you not merely with the approval of his conscience, but at the behest of his conscience.

Because the Immaturity Market Will Never Be Saturated

We’re not politics/culture/media chauvinists here at The Broken Watch. John Rogers at Kung Fu Monkey posted this tiny masterpiece back in 2004, and I’ve been dying to share it:

That’s Just Kaasa. You Don’t Have to Worry About Him.

By way of introduction, my name is Christopher Aaron Kaasa and I’m a news junkie. I attend the University of Washington-Seattle, and I plan on graduating next year with a degree in political science and history. So I, uh, know what I’m talking about?

This is my contribution to the brave new culture of short attention spans and constant stimulation. One writes what one knows, and I know the UW, Seattle, and politics. Extra credit on topics that include some combination of these. My ambition is to average two or three posts a day.

For your enlightenment and convenience, I have provided links to some of my favorite sites. Always accepting nominees for that seat of honor.

And now let’s get to it, yes?
