VA Tech Shooter Named

It’s the worst gun massacre in American history, and we’re busy pulling out the clichés:

While he had a residence established in Centreville, Va., Mr. Cho was living on campus in Harper Residence Hall. He was described as a “loner” by the university’s associate vice president, Harry Hincker, on CNN. [My emphasis.]

Well, of course you’d say that. It’s what instinctively rolls off your tongue in a situation like this, and it means absolutely nothing – it’s not a reason, it’s not an insight, it’s not a consolation, and it’s certainly not an apology. Read Christopher Hitchens’ brief essay on post-tragedy buck-passing, dated back in January, to get a taste of what’s to come as the vigils and promises of solidarity die down and people start wondering how the hell nobody saw this coming.

Hopefully we have another day or so before the gun control battle flares up in earnest. Until then, Andrew Sullivan gives voice to my view on the gun rights folks’ fatuous rumination, “If only the kids had been carrying guns too…”:

Whatever the pros and cons of gun control in general, I find the idea of a place of learning being filled with students carrying concealed weapons to be a deeply disturbing idea. It is the antithesis of civilization.

Chris, I regret to inform you that the debate has already begun. Warren Olney is a terrific moderator, but I think that debates of this nature should be delayed at least until the people who were actually affected by this can process this whole event.

Here is the debate

And the link to the soundbite

What I am waiting for now is the immigration debate to start up. I hope that this isn't the case, because for all of those who "aren't against immigraiton, just illegal immigration" this could turn out to evolve into complete xenophobic sentiment. I just hope that O'Reilly doesn't decide that he wants to take up arms against crimes by legal immigrants now.

Oh and it's not a matter of the kids carrying guns, but a matter of the professors carrying guns. The gun lobby approached VT and other colleges in Virginia to try and pass measures where teachers could carry guns. Pretty much all of the schools did not want the measure.

I believe that the teachers do not want the added responsibility of defending a room full of students. Having the lives of over one hundred people in your hands is an incredible amount of pressure to put onto individuals. Look at the sports pros failing under pressure - failed free throws, failed field goals, think about actually doing something that really matters. Also, imagine the possible lawsuits against teachers for not doing enough to defend their students. Our professors are educators, not defenders. We should not enlist our educators to do things that the police are supposed to do. I don't think that they considered that when forming their incredibly stupid argument that everyone should carry guns.
